About Huanucite
Huanucite is a dark red type of jasper with milky quartz veins, originating in the Peruvian department of Huánuco.
It’s a beautiful material for all kinds of products from jewelry to decor and home decor. Huanucite produces an incredible polish.
Rarity
Huanucite is only known from the Department of Huanuco in Peru.
Availability
We don’t know how big Huanucite’s natural reserve is. So far it is readily available. We are offering:
- rough rock
- preselected jewelry-grade slabs
- polished decor
- cabochons, and
- jewelry
Color
Huanucite is a mixture of red jasper with milky quartz.
Jewelry-grade color:
Jewelry-grade must show a good mixture of dark red, rose-color, and white milky quartz. Sometimes there is also a yellowish-white present. Material that shows only one color or has little contrast is discarded. Approximately 20 % of the rough rock from the mine shows jewelry-grade material
Impurities
Huanucite comes with black impurities. Such material is discarded from use for jewelry.
Polishable
Huanucit can be polished to glass-finish.
Cutting Quality
Advantages:
Huanucite does not tend to break or chip. Experienced cutters therefore can obtain very sharp unchipped edges between the backside and bezel as well as between the bezel and dome.
Top-cutting-quality is characterized by:
- a polished backside
- a sharp unchipped edge between the backside and the bezel
- a very straight and even highly polished bezel
- a sharp unchipped edge between the bezel and the dome
- a well-shaped dome, not showing any deformation
- Top-quality polish
Pricing
Adequate pricing must take into account the cost factors to obtain top-quality cabochons:
- Acquisition of top-grade Huanucite with strong color in the mine.
- Selection of material without impurities and discarding more than 80 percent of the rough rock as unsuitable for jewelry.
- A usual material loss of approximately 90 % of the selected material during the cutting and shaping process.
- The level of experience required by a cutter to produce a flawlessly shaped and highly polished cabochon.

String color contrast: dark red, rose-colored red, white (and sometimes yellow)
Cutting Quality:
- Straight bezel (minor irregularities possible), 3 mm high
- Perfect dome (3-5 mm high)
- Edges between bezel and dome, as well as bezel and backside: sharp and crispy, minor chips on lower edge possible
- Backside flat at 280 grit, unpolished
