Peruvian Rosophia
Gemstone Quality Standard
About Peruvian Rosophia
“Rosophia” is not a mineral designated by the International Mineralogy Union. Rather it is a brand name invented by Mr. Robert Simmons, founder of the company “Heaven and Earth”, a company that offers products of gems and minerals for spiritual and healing purposes. The name is derived from “Rose of Sophia” according to Simmons with the meaning “Heart of Wisdom”. It is assumed that Rosophia is a mixture of red moonstone (moonstone, being a variant of feldspar), quartz, and biotite particles.
Ethical mining
Peruvian Rosophia is not mined. It is surface collected in the Peruvian Desert (rockhounding). No dynamite or chemicals are used. No habitat destruction occurs.
Rarity
According to Simmons Rosophia can only be found in the Rocky Mountains in the United States. In 2017, Gemrock discovered a small Rosophia deposit in the desert of Ica, Peru, near Paracas.
Availability
Gemrock Peru is the only supplier of Peruvian Rosophia. We are selling rough rock, decor carvings, pre-selected jewelry-grade slabs, cabochons, as well as jewelry with Rosophia.
Color
Peruvian Rosophia shows a mottled mixture of shades of red with translucent quartz spots and black feldspar spots.
Jewelry-grade material:
Jewelry-grade material shows a darker coloration and a strong color contrast between the different shades of red and other colors. More uniformly colored material with a touch towards brick stone reds or brownish reds must be discarded as they are not polishing well and don’t look good as jewelry.
Polishable
Jewelry-grade material is polishable to a glass finish.
Cutting Quality
Challenges:
Rosphia is a very hard material. Carving and polishing it therefore requires more labor and the process uses more tools, increasing the price of the cabochons.
Advantages:
Rosophina does not tend to break or chip. Experienced cutters therefore can obtain very sharp unchipped edges between the backside and bezel as well as between the bezel and dome.
Top-cutting-quality is characterized by:
- a polished backside
- a sharp unchipped edge between the backside and the bezel
- a very straight and even highly polished bezel
- a sharp unchipped edge between the bezel and the dome
- a well-shaped dome, not showing any deformation
- Top-quality polish
Pricing
Adequate pricing must take into account the cost factors to obtain top-quality cabochons:
- Acquisition of top-grade Angelite with strong color in the mine.
- Selection of material without impurities and discarding more than 80 percent of the rough rock as unsuitable for jewelry.
- A usual material loss of approximately 90 % of the selected material during the cutting and shaping process.
- The level of experience required by a cutter to produce a flawlessly shaped and highly polished cabochon from such a soft material.
- Our Jewelry Grade (A)
- Our Top-Quality Jewelry Grade (AA)
- Our Premium Jewelry Grade (AAA)
