Gemrocks Apatite mining

In 2021, Gemrock staff members went rockhounding in the central Peruvian desert mountains and discovered an area with a very rich geology, where we did locate epidote, tourmaline, tourmaline in quartz and apatite as possible minerals to be exploited for decor and jewelry products.

We do know now that the area we are working in is a skarn area. Most skarns form when carbonate rocks such as limestone, dolomite stone or marble are intruded by a magma body with contact metamorphism because of the heat being the primary agent of change. 

Then, as the magma cools, it releases water which moves through the surrounding rock by flowing or diffusing through pore spaces, fractures, and even the mineral grains that make up the rock. These acidic waters are superheated and supersaturated with dissolved metal ions, especially calcium and silicon. As it invades the rock, the hot, acidic, metal-laden water dissolves, replaces, recrystallizes and alters minerals in the rock.

Small Apatite Crystals

Length of the crystals ranges from 5 mm to 13 mm

Medium-sized Apatite Crystals

Length of the crystals ranges from 15 mm to 26 mm. The can be longer than the next size class but they always will be less thick.

Large Apatite Crystals

Length of the crystals ranges from 15 to 20 mm but they are considerably thicker than the previous size class and could be used for cutting small cabochons.
