Pyrite
See this video to learn more about how to identify Pyrite quality:
The quality grading of pyrite is very complicated, given the fact that:
- The price per kilo is NOT determined by the size of the cluster, but by the size of the crystals on a cluster.
- Bulk and collector levels are differentiated by the amount of damage on the cluster.
- It has 3 main crystal shapes and many intermediary shapes, all priced differently.
- It occurs in combination with many other minerals (all priced differently)

Pyrite Crystal Qualities
Solid Pyrite
āSolid pyriteā is the interior of big, broken Pyrite cubes. The cubic crystals are grown masses that have no drusy inside. They are sold in sizes of around 3 cm (compared with a small Peruvian lemon).
Solid Pyrite is comparatively rare and, therefore, sold at higher prices than pyrite with druses and small crystals. It is mostly used for jewelry.
In Gemrock, we specialize in adding value to solid pyrite by creating fusion jewelry with other minerals, like in this example, our “Royal Pearl” made from solid Pyrite and Lapis Lazuli.
In Gemrock, we are not only using the inside of big cubes for these massive metallic-looking cabochons. We are also using the fractured and uniquely formed outside of big cubes to create very special breathtaking natural cabochons. Each one of those cabs is one of a kind.Ā

Quinoa Quality
Quinoa is of the lowest and cheapest quality. It’s a Pyrite with many small drusy, covered with the smallest crystals of around 1 mm in size (similar to sand grains or the name-giving quinoa seed).
We generally recommend our clients NOT to buy products made from quinoa. They just don’t look good.

Chispa (Spark) Pyrite Quality
Chispa (also called “Spark”) is a competitive option of Pyrite for the smaller purse. The crystals on these clusters do vary in size from 1 mm to 3 mm. Chispa is the most common quality used for crystal carvings.
Many do use it for jewelry, too. However, we do only recommend this in combination with top-quality polish, or in case of crystal surfaces for small cabs and jewelry.

Chispa-Top
Also called “Chispa resaltada” or “Top-Spark”, this pyrite features crystals whose size varies from 3 mm to 6 mm.
Carvings made from chispa-top do stand out from the crowd due to their shine and the crystal formations easily to be observed.
It makes for impressive cabochons and jewelry pieces.

Cocada Pyrite Quality
Big crystals that vary in size between 6 mm and 1 cm.

First Class Cocada (Cocada resaltada)
Some dealers consider an additional quality level called “First Class Cocada” (Cocada Resaltada / Cocada Top). Its Pyrite with crystals of an average size of 1 cm to 1.5 cm.

Cubes
Crystal size 2 a 5 cm. This size class and higher is commonly sold as a crystal collector’s piece. Polished pieces with this crystal size are rare and unique luxury pieces.

Warning: Only work with Peruvian Dealers you can trust in
It is an unwritten marketing law, not to talk badly about the competition. However, as an ethically minded business, we have no other choice than to make you aware of a few facts:
There are a number of international wholesalers (especially from India and China – no offense intended), who believe that the kilo price for bulk pyrite can be negotiated further down and they implement fierce negotiating pressure on providers like us. But there is a limit to all negotiations. To comply with so-called “best prices” and still make a profit, Peruvian sellers have developed several methods to save money and cheat on their clients.
The following practices are commonplace:
Save money on cleaning: Pyrite comes from the mine very dirty and has to be passed through several cleaning steps in different acids. The same is true for carved products. The carving process is very dirty and all objects have to be cleaned when finished. Only a good cleaning process will ensure that the pyrite stays shiny for a long time. Dealers save money by:
- using watered down weaker acids
- make fewer cleaning steps and clean superficially
- dont let the crystals dry out sufficient time after the cleaning process
All this will result in a cheaper price, but your pyrite will get dull and dark after only a few months.
Save money by upgrading low-quality crystals: Dealers for example use quinoa quality, mix in a small percentage of chispa (spark) pyrite, and sell the entire lot as 100% spark pyrite.
Save even more money, by mixing in toxic pyrite: Pyrite from Peru should always come from Huanzala mine which is the pyrite with the least amount of toxic arsenic.

Be Aware of Toxic Pyrite
There are Peruvian companies, that do mix Pyrite from Trujillo province or from Morococha mine with real Huanzala pyrite and then sell the entire lot as Huanzala pyrite.
Such pyrite has a very high content of arsenic and is a toxic material, that may put the health of your clients at risk.
At first glance, objectsĀ may look the same as Huanzala pyrite.Ā However, you can easily distinguish both: Have a look atĀ unpolished parts. While Huanzala pyrite has aĀ clean golden color, Trujillo pyrite showsĀ black patches.
After just a few months, the shine of the pyrite will disappear andĀ the material will blacken. This material is not only a danger to health it will also lead toĀ complaints from your clients and damage your companiesā image.
In Gemrock Peru we do NOT engage in such practices:
- We sell 100% quinoa or 100% chispa – no mixes allowed. In the rare case that a wholeseller insists on a lower price we can offer mixes, but in this case we do declare in full transparency how many percent of each quality is mixed in.
- We never sell toxic pyrite
- We never compromise on cleaning.

Why Gemrock Crystal Products are truly ethical:
Founded in 2017 by biologist and professional nature conservationist Stefan AustermĆ¼hle, Gemrock was born to be more than just a crystal wholesale business. As a result, Nature conservation and ethical workers’ treatment throughout the entire production chain are at the core of our business. We are changing the crystal industry for the better one crystal at a time.
- We do not source our raw materials from conflict areas, from mines that employ children, from drug production areas, or mining that finances genocide and civil war.
- All our gemstones, silver, and gold come from legal sources. We do not support illegal mining or shadow business.
- Our entire production (crystal carving, silver and goldsmithing, as well as jewelry production is in-house. We control 100% of the production chain.
- Gemrock employees are paid fair salaries higher than the industry average. They are hired under legal labor contracts with all legally required labor benefits. Excellent work is motivated with bonuses and our employees get a share of the company’s annual profits.
- Hiring is independent of any non-work related factors (gender, skin color, nationality, or else). Only knowledge and labor quality do matter.
- We offer our employees safe labor conditions.
- Saving water and energy, and re-using and recycling materials to the maximum is an ongoing effort.
- We constantly measure our carbon footprint and neutralize our climate impact by financing a tree-planting project.
The maximum possible transparency is Gemrocks’ most important communication rule. You can find ample information about our ethical business in our blog (on this website) and on all of our social networks. For more details on our ethical standards, read here:

The stone is included on lists of toxic minerals because it might contain small amounts of arsenic. Yes, it can contain some arsenic, but since the crystal is not soluble in water or hydrochloric acid, it poses no risks when handled.
As a decorative item, it is quite safe to have in the home. When exposed to humid air, pyrite reacts with oxygen and water to create iron sulfide (the rust), corrosive sulfuric acid, and harmful sulfur dioxide gas. However, the amount is so small that no health risk can be expected.
In jewelry, it is not dangerous when set in Silver or gold to avoid direct skin contact.
The iron sulfate content of the pyrite can cause skin irritation; people with delicate skin conditions should carry it in a silver or gold setting and avoid direct contact with the skin.
