Serpentinite
About Serpentinite
Serpentinite is a metamorphic rock composed of a group of minerals, like Antigorite, Lizardite, Chrysotile, magnetite, and Brucite.
Serpentinite shows a variety of shades of green. The ancient origin of the name is uncertain; it is said to come from a supposed similarity of its texture or color to snakeskin.
Peruvian serpentinite often contains pyrite which adds to the qualities of this stone.
Serpentinite has a significant amount of bound water, hence it contains abundant hydrogen atoms able to slow down neutrons by elastic collision (neutron thermalization process). Because of this serpentinite can be used to protect from radiation. Serpentinite has been used as a dry filler inside steel jackets in some designs of nuclear reactors.
Serpentine group minerals have a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 3.5, so serpentinite is easily carved.
Some ancient ethnic people used this stone as a substitute for jade for making earrings and necklaces. Serpentine also was believed to have the ability to ward off evil spirits and protect from bad energies and the evil eye.
