About Rose Quartz

The pink color of rose quartz is attributed to microscopic inclusions of a pink variety of the mineral dumortierite. These inclusions are usually abundant enough to make the rose quartz translucent instead of transparent.

The pink color of rose quartz ranges from a very light, almost imperceptible pink, to a rich translucent pink. It is usually cut into cabochons, beads, and faceted stones of about eight millimeters or larger to display the rich pink color.

Rose quartz is one of the most commonly encountered lapidary materials. It is abundant, usually inexpensive, and popular as tumbled stones, beads, and cabochons. These have the richest color when pieces are at least a centimeter in diameter or thickness because of the material’s weak color. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and a lack of cleavage, rose quartz is durable enough for use in any type of jewelry.

Faceted rose quartz is rarely seen because transparent pink quartz is rare, and translucent rose quartz does not compete well with other faceted materials. Although rose quartz cabochons are popular in craft jewelry, rose quartz is seen far less often in commercial or designer jewelry. Its pink color does not contrast strongly with metal settings or the skin color of many people.

Rarity

While there are huge deposits of Rose Quartz in Africa, it is very rare in Peru

Availablity

Given the fact that Peruvian Rose Quartz is very expensive to obtain on local level, because it is rare in Peru, we can not compete with the very low international pricing. We therefore do not sell Rose Quartz, but use the cabochons produce mainly in our own jewelry.

Be aware of false material declaration

It is frequent to find Pink Opal being confused with Rose Quartz. In order to avoid this, please have a look at our Pink Opal Gemstone Quality Standard.

Pricing

Adequate pricing must take into account the cost factors to obtain top-quality cabochons:

  • Selection of material without white quartz and discarding more than 80 percent of the Peruvian Rose Quartz as unsuitable for jewelry.
  • A usual material loss of approximately 90 % of the selected material during the cutting and shaping process.
  • The level of experience required by a cutter to produce a flawlessly shaped and highly polished cabochon.

The data in this sheet has been compiled by reviewing a great number of websites and sales platforms. We have only considered Rose Quartz that look similar to Peruvian material.

Cutting quality:

The vast majority of “cabochons” on offer show very low cutting quality. Very frequently cabochons are cut with rounded corners (similar to a palmstone) which do not show any bezel.

Pricing

The average pricing for Rose Quartz cabochons is 0.41 USD per carat (with a range from 0.28 USD per carat to 0.60 USD per carat).

We could not find a correlation between cutting quality or material quality and pricing. A higher price does not indicate a higher quality.
