About Peruvian Tiger Aragonite
Peruvian Tiger Aragonite polishes to a glass-like surface and is a top-grade material for jewelry, decor, and home decor.
Peruvian Tiger Aragonite shows a very strong fluorescence AND phosphorescence. When put under UV-Light some of its bands emit a very bright white light. When the light is switched off they show a strong and long-lasting green afterglow.
An amazing material that looks great under natural and UV light, as well as in deco-pieces and jewelry.
Peruvian Tiger Aragonite comes in several color variations:
Standard jewelry-grade
- The characteristic tiger stripes: Bright orange layers of 3 mm to 1 cm thickness interchanging with white and white/greyish layers. Standard jewelry-grade displays at least 1 orange layer.
- Small orange, blueish/pinkish layers of 1 to 3 mm thickness, interchanging with thicker white/yellowish, and dark red layers.
- An entirely reddish/orange material with mixed-up color shades. Standard jewelry grade has more white parts and a lesser color contrast.
Top jewelry-grade
- Striped top jewelry-grade material has at least 2 to 3 orange stripes. No pores are allowed.
- An entirely reddish/orange material with mixed-up color shades. top jewelry-grade material has few white parts and a stronger color contrast.
Rarity
Tiger Aragonite is a Peruvian stone. It comes from one mine. There is quite an abundant reserve of it.
Impurities
Tiger Aragonite does not show impurities, but sometimes has pores. Porous material and stone with colors of low contrast should not be used for jewelry.
Polishable
Tiger Aragonite shows a superb glass finish when well polished.
Cutting Quality
Advantages:
Tiger Aragonite does not tend to break or chip. Experienced cutters therefore can obtain very sharp unchipped edges between the backside and bezel as well as between the bezel and dome.
Premium-cutting-quality is characterized by:
- a polished backside
- a sharp unchipped edge between the backside and the bezel
- a very straight and even highly polished bezel
- a sharp unchipped edge between the bezel and the dome
- a well-shaped dome, not showing any deformation
- Top-quality polish
Pricing
Adequate pricing must take into account the cost factors to obtain top-quality cabochons:
- Acquisition of top-grade Tiger Aragonite with strong color in the mine.
- Selection of material without pores and discarding material with insufficient color contrast.
- A usual material loss of approximately 90 % of the selected material during the cutting and shaping process.
- The level of experience required by a cutter to produce a flawlessly shaped and highly polished cabochon from such a soft material.
