First, regular Tumbled Stones are produced in machines with no human labor involved. This, however, is only possible with hard stones like quartz, and amethyst. etc. Peruvian Stones are mostly so soft that tumbling is not an option. So actually, even if they are called “tumbled” stones, most of them are made one by one by hand.
Our jewelry-grade “tumbled stones” are perfectly shaped, scratch-free, and super polished. You can use them for jewelry.

Artisinal Standard-grade Tumbled Stones – What is it?
Those tumbled stones are also made one by one by hand in so-called “artisan” workshops in Lima, mostly illegal shadow business enterprises with no respect for labor rights and labor benefits.
Gemrock Peru started in 2024 to work with three of those workshops, helping them to transition towards a legal business. This way we hope to improve the Peruvian crystal industry from within step by step. While we cannot guarantee that workers will be paid fairly by their employers or receive the legally required labor benefits, we can assure our clients that our providers are taking steps to convert into legal business.
We are making sure of this by paying them via bank transfers, requiring official bills, and supporting them with our accounting department in learning how to declare income and pay taxes. This way those businesses become visible to the law and over time will need to start hiring employees with real contracts.
To support those companies, willing to change, we are now offering their tumbled stones to our clients as a low-cost alternative to our jewelry-grade tumbled stones.
What you can expect when buying artisanal tumbled stones:
1. Minimum order size: 5 Kg per type of stone.
2. You will get a tumbled stone quality that compares with the quality offered by all Peruvian crystal exporters, not more and not less.
3. While our jewelry grade tumbled stones have standardized sizes and you know how many stones per kilo you will receive more or less, we cannot provide such a guarantee when buying artisan tumbled stones. The provider will pack tumbled stones at a commercial size range he sees fit. You can not pick sizes or require certain sizes.
4. While we discard materials that are too low in quality, artisan providers will use the quality they see fit. You cannot pick stones or reject stones based on material quality considerations.
5. Artisan workshops will make their tumbled stones from cut-off rests. The tumbled stones will have flat areas and are not perfectly rounded.
6. Tumbled stones are a mass product and in order to produce them fast and cheap workers will not invest time in top quality. Artisan tumbled stones will have scratches and will not have the same top-quality polish as our jewelry-grade stones.
Odd shapes:
This was made from cut-offs from other products. The stones show the unnatural flat surfaces from the cutting process on one or several sides. Just not looking like a pebble, because nature does not make flat areas.
Scratched:
As these stones are fabricated fast there will be always scratches in the centers of the flat areas that have not been removed by the polishing wheels.
Opaque:
Since the appearance of our jewelry-grade tumbled stones on the global market, clients have been pressuring Peruvian workshops to increase their polishing quality. However, they are still not comparable with our polish. They will shine more on the corners and less on the flat surfaces and sometimes they will be even rather opaque.
